Deep Listening Experiment at Whitefish Dunes State Park

The public is invited to join Jessica Harvey and a Door County naturalist on a sonic exploration of the Whitefish Bay Dunes State Park. Utilizing the deep listening, participants will further explore what it means to “walk so silently that the bottoms of your feet become ears.” What happens when we slow down and listen to our outer and inner worlds? What does a sound feel like? Look like? Where does our attention take us? We will use prompts to create our own deep listening maps, scores, and writing that allow us to listen with a multitude of senses. All are welcome, and these deep listening experiments can be adjusted to accommodate a range of ages and abilities. Materials for writing and drawing will be provided.

Dome House Creative Lab: 12 X 12 Color Chalk to Stencils with Alfonsa Vistian

My name is Alfonsa Vistian, I am a visual art teacher at Liberty Jr, High in Burbank, IL. There I work with lots of students making all sorts of great art projects! In my spare time I love creating mosaic art made of glass tiles, sewing, picture framing, baking lots of goodies, and taking care of my eleven chickens!

I’m excited to share this art project with you. It consists of applying colored chalk pastels to stencils you design and cut yourself. This easy technique is super fun not matter your artistic ability, and slightly messy. The end piece will be a 12x12 work of art, with a series of different shapes creating boarders that get smaller and smaller. You’ll take your art home in a plastic sleeve and can be easily framed with a ready-made frame.

Each class is limited to the first 15 children of ages 7-12. Please reserve a space by emailing: kids@domehouseart.org. Your space is guaranteed only if you receive a confirmation email.

Dome House Creative Lab: A few of my favorite things with Ariana Vaeth

Ariana Vaeth is a artist focused on contemporary narrative through the self-portrait. Her work presents an entanglement of tender interactions between friends, family, and chosen-family. Vaeth received her undergraduate degree from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, and she teaches Interdisciplinary Drawing at Beloit College. Ariana was the first A.I.R. at the Dome House.

In this workshop, art students will create paintings of their favorite toys/objects that represent them. Each child/family should bring in 2-4 objects they cherish. Together, we will create expressive still life drawings that represent what we love about ourselves. Possible objects can be:

  • Dolls

  • Old or framed photographs

  • Books

  • Sentimental items

  • A can of soda or box of cereal

  • Jewelry

  • A pair of shoes

Each class is limited to the first 15 children of ages 7-12. Please reserve a space by emailing: kids@domehouseart.org. Your space is guaranteed only if you receive a confirmation email.

Meet Artist Nicole Shaver

You are invited to join us this Saturday, September 3, 2022 at Door County's iconic Dome House to meet artist in residence Nicole Shaver. You will have the opportunity to learn about her artistic process as well as what she aims to accomplish during her 8-week residency in a presentation scheduled for 4:00pm – 5:30pm. A reception will follow Shaver's presentation where light refreshments will be available for guests.

“My research as an artist involves collecting and meditating on new places by exploring through walking, running, sketching, making, and photographing," says Shaver. "A place is like a person, if one fails to have genuine interaction with it, it too fades from our memory. I’d be honored to get to know the unique forested shoreline of Whitefish Bay through my time at the Dome House."

The event is free and open to the public. All artists, art students, educators, enthusiasts and community members are welcome to attend - bring a friend and enjoy this engaging event in a spectacular setting! Proof of vaccination is not required. Masks are required indoors and visitors are asked to practice social distancing. *Due to limited on-site parking at the Dome House, attendees are asked to park at 3752 Whitefish Bay Road, Sturgeon Bay, and walk to the Dome House located 0.7 miles north on left.
