RESIDENCY FAQ

Can I bring my family, partner, or guest?

We would love to accommodate your friends, family, and loved ones, but are unable to at this time.

How do I get to the Dome House?

The county is about a 2.5-hour drive northeast from Milwaukee and a 4.5-hour drive north from Chicago or east from Minneapolis. Specifically, the Dome House is located in the community of Whitefish Bay just 15-minutes North of the City of Sturgeon Bay on the waters of Lake Michigan.

If traveling by plane, the closest airport is the Austin Straubel International Airport in Green Bay. Once you fly into Green Bay, Door County is about a 1.5 hour drive north. There are several taxi and car services that can provide transport if needed.

How do I get around the Peninsula once I’m there?

Artists in residence are responsible for their own transportation locally. Public transportation is not available. There will, however, be bikes provided.

Am I responsible for my own meals?

Artists in residence will be responsible for groceries and preparation of meals. Basic cooking equipment will be provided including, microwave, toaster oven, refrigerator, portable electric cook top, dishes, utensils, cookware and gas grill.

Will my living expenses be covered?

Artists will receive a $500 stipend to support creative endeavors while in residence. Artists are expected to cover all other personal living expenses, additional materials, and supplies.

Will I receive a stipend?

Yes, artists will receive a $500 stipend to support creative endeavors while in residence.

What facilities or equipment will be provided?

The space includes free computer and internet access and all utilities. An industrial sink, work tables and wall space are available. If additional equipment is needed, artists should advise the Miller Art Museum in a timely manner, however The Miller reserves the right to determine what needs or accommodations it shall provide.

Is the space accessible?

Unfortunately, due to the unique nature of the home the facility is not accessible.

Are there any eccentricities about the living space I should expect?

Living at the Dome House is a wonderful, comfortable experience. Because the property is set back from the road it’s quiet and serene throughout the day. However, because of the unique nature of its design, the Dome House is prone to temperature fluctuations; artists should be prepared for this, especially cooler temperatures during early fall, and plan accordingly.

What is the community like?

Often called the Cape Cod of the midwest, Door County has a robust tourism economy—but is also home to many year-long residents. Whitefish Bay is a residential part of Door County, sandwiched between Lake Michigan’s beautiful sand dunes and the dense woods of Cave Point County Park. Door County, and Whitefish Bay in particular, have long been a creative haven for artists.

Why is the program limited to artists in fine arts, photography and printing making?

These are the media which are consistent with the Miller Museum’s current collection as well as those in which Al Quinlan worked. We may broaden the scope in future years. If you have questions about whether your work may be consistent with the scope of the residency please contact us at doordomehouse@gmail.com.

What if I work in a medium other than printmaking, photography or fine arts?

At this time, the residency is only open to individuals working in those mediums. In the future, we hope to open it up to writers, ceramicists, sculptors and other mediums.
